Journalism

A reporter’s notebook is a passport to experiences that money could not buy

I’ve hitched a ride with a fighter pilot in a Tornado, joined Scotland Yard detectives on a murder hunt in Kenya, taken tea in the back shop with Paul Smith and shared a fit of the giggles with Liam Neeson.

Through early jobs on regional newspapers I became immersed in the heart-racing world of news reporting. Later I joined the staff of the Daily Mail as an award-winning feature writer and then commissioning editor and columnist. I also regularly ghosted opinion pieces from religious and business leaders, military top brass and scientists.

At Scotland on Sunday I was celebrity interviewer, sitting down to chat with Gordon Brown at his wildly untidy desk and with Princess Anne at Holyrood Palace.

I’ve freelanced for the Sunday Times, Guardian, Observer, Daily Express, Daily Mirror, Scotsman, Evening Standard, Times Higher Educational Supplement. The magazines I’ve written for include She, Eve, Woman & Home, Bella, Best, You and Your Wedding and The Listener.

When my husband Alan and I left England to live in Paris I told our story in a series of columns for Living Abroad magazine.  Since then I've enjoyed exploring our new home city to write insider's guides for newspapers and magazines.

Here's my guide to Paris for writers, published in The Independent on Sunday
